Day 6

I spent the day thinking it was Tuesday. So, the good news is that I have one more day than I thought I did to get things done this week.

N (age 12):

Math: N warmed up with mental math and a worksheet on multiplication. Her lesson was on solving algebraic equations involving percentages. That extra step of turning fractions or decimals into percentages threw her a bit. She has a tenuous hold on the concept now, but will most likely need more review. She completed a lesson review.

Bible: N and C reviewed their memory verse (Galatians 4:4-5, Isaiah 9:7). Their lesson was on Jesus’ baptism. We talked about John the Baptist’s appeal (e.g. weird appearance, radical speech, etc.).

Reading: N read some of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She also read three more chapters of Don Quixote (abridged). I read a chapter of The Case of the Gypsy Goodbye to N and C last night.

Composition: N and C tried to write the longest sentence using words increasing in letter number (i.e. first word one letter, second word two letters, third word three letters, etc.). Their sentences ended up being five and six words respectively.

Spelling: N practiced her lesson on multiple syllable words.

Science: N and C continued their study of the alkali metals with sodium. For their experiment, they made homemade ice cream while we discussed the reason salt lowers the freezing point and raises the boiling point of water.

History: N learned about the settlements in Maryland and the Carolinas, about common life as a colonial (hint: it was pretty rough), and about the growth of slavery in A Patriot’s History of the United States. She began reading You Wouldn’t Want to be an 18th Century British Convict!: a Trip to Australia You’d Rather not Take

Geography: N and C filled in the countries they know in Africa so far. Today, they learned about Algeria from the CIA World Factbook, and looked at pictures of Algeria and its inhabitants that we found online.

Spanish: N completed several more lessons in Spanish.

Music: N practiced her scales and her lesson.

C (age 10):

Math: C warmed up with mental math. We reviewed the four problems she got incorrect on her lesson review from yesterday. She tends to rush through her lessons and make careless mistakes. She seldom demonstrates a lack of understanding about the content. Her lesson today was a review of naming numbers using their place value (things like saying “one hundred eight” and not “one hundred and eight,” which is a big pet peeve of mine). She completed a worksheet on addition (she loves me timing her worksheets, and averaged about three seconds per problem today) and finished a lesson review.

Reading: C read chapters four through six of Great Expectations (abridged). I read a chapter of The Case of the Gypsy Goodbye to N and C last night.

Spelling: C had an assessment and only got one word wrong. She originally wrote the word correctly, and then second-guessed herself.

Composition: Combined class with N.

Bible: Combined class with N.

Science: Combined class with N.

History: C and S learned about Mary Queen of Scots and her son James. They learned about Guy Fawkes and the plot to blow up Parliament.

Spanish: C completed several more lessons in Spanish.

Music: C practiced her ukulele.

S (age 7):

Math: S warmed up by counting to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s. She recited the days of the week and the months of the year. She learned how to write the number 45. Her lesson was on counting by 2s through 20. She completed a worksheet on addition and a lesson review.

Reading: S continued her unit of All About Reading. She read through flashcards of words containing “l,” “o,” and “w.” She began to learn the sight word “of.”

Grammar: S recited the poem she memorized last year about the months. She learned about initials and we talked about the initials of everyone in the family. We practiced the correct use of “he,” “she,” and “I” in response to a question (e.g. “Who is it?” “It is I.”)

Writing: S copied some of the words she’s been learning to read on a worksheet that I made from the Writing Wizard website.

Spelling: S practiced letter sounds in preparation for sounding out spelling words.

Bible: S and H practiced their memory verse (Proverbs 11:3, Titus 2:7) and I red them the second devotional from 30 Very Veggie Devos About Honesty.

History: Combined class with C.

Science: S decided she wanted to learn more about her favorite animal this week, the shark. She watched the first two episodes of “Shark Man with Riley Elliot” on Amazon Prime Video.

H (age 5):

Math: H filled out the next date in her calendar and colored the date block according to the pattern. We counted how many days she’s done math class. Her lesson introduced pictographs. She drew a picture of every member of our family and then glued them to a graph according to gender. She answered some basic questions about the graph.

Reading: H reviewed A, B, C, D, E, and F. I introduced G and H.

Writing: H copied A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H on a worksheet that I made from the Writing Wizard website.

Bible: Combined class with S.
