I really had to force myself to do school today. It was a beautiful morning, I was in the zone with my knitting, and I had to take Little R to the dentist later. I powered through and was happy in the long run that I did it.
N (age 12):
Math: I actually never got around to giving N her math lesson. I usually do math with N while C does chores, then do math with C while N does chores, and then bring them in for their “together classes.” I went out of order and did C’s math first and, well, there you go. No math for N, who did not feel the need to remind me.
Bible: N and C reviewed their memory verses (2 Timothy 3:16-17, Exodus 20:1-17, Psalm 1:1-6, Psalm 23:1-5, and Isaiah 53:1-12) and the books of the Bible. They learned about Nehemiah feeling urged by God to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem and getting permission from King Artaxerxes to take a break from his duties (he was the cup-bearer to the king) to accomplish just that.
Reading: N read a chapter of her library book and a chapter of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I read a couple chapters of The Case of the Missing Marquess to N and C last night. We discussed the restrictive Victorian dress for women and the role of women at that time.
Spelling: N practiced her lesson on two-syllable words.
Geography: N and C filled in the European countries they know. I was shocked to find that National Geographic Kids had a page on Bosnia and Herzegovina, which we covered today! All the little former SSRs are giving N and C a run for their money in filling out the maps. They’ll get it eventually. They succeeded in memorizing all those Middle Eastern and Asian countries.
Science: N and C did an experiment today on chemical reactions with several experiments with yeast and sugar. They were amazed at how much the yeast expanded (or “farted,” as they like to call it) in the sugar water. They asked questions that led to more experiments (“Will it grow more with more sugar?” “Will it grow with no sugar in the water?”). Fun class!
Writing: N and C wrote three descriptive sentences attempting to give an overall impression of a person by describing just their hands.
Music: N continued practicing her scales. She practiced her new lesson.
C (age 10):
Math: C warmed up with mental math. Her lesson was on multiplying by 10, 100, and 1000. We compared and contrasted this lesson to yesterday’s lesson. C learns best when she can make connections between concepts and subjects.
Spelling: C practiced her words with the consonant digraphs “kn,” “gn,” “wr,” “gh,” “ph,” “ch,” and “ck.”
Bible: Combined class with N.
Geography: Combined class with N.
Science: Combined class with N.
Writing: Combined class with N.
Music: C continued working on her chord transitions, playing individual notes, and reading music. She continued her drumming lessons.
S (age 7):
Math: S helped me with a recipe and measuring today, as a little break from book work for her after a rough reading class.
Reading: S continued her unit of All About Reading. She warmed up by reading some flashcards (including the sight words “the” and “a”). S continued reading the long list of words she will find in the next story she reads. I read three chapters of The Case of the Left-Handed Lady last night. I was only going to read two, but S and H wanted to hear more.
Grammar: S continued memorizing “The Months.” She reviewed the list of pronouns she’s learned. She continued to practice orally replacing nouns with pronouns in sentences I dictated to her.
Writing: S copied her name and some of the words she’s learning to read using a custom worksheet from HandwritingPractice.Net.
