I typed this last week. Then I forgot to save the draft. Now I’ve got to retype it. so, I don’t remember how the day went, which leads me to believe it was neither horrible nor spectacular. I’m going with a normal, middle-of-the-road day.
N (age 12):
Math: N and I went over her math assessment to cover the key concepts that she hadn’t quite mastered yet.
Bible: N and C reviewed their memory verses (2 Timothy 3:16-17, Exodus 20:1-17, Psalm 1:1-6, Psalm 23:1-5, and Isaiah 53:1-11) and the books of the Bible. They learned about the politics played by the governors of the regions west of the Euphrates that resulted in King Cyrus ordering construction of the Temple walls halted. We compared it to politics today, and talked about how the nature of politics is pretty static.
Reading: N read a chapter of her library book and a chapter of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I finished Tuck Everlasting last night. N and C watched the movie today. As is usually the case, they didn’t like the movie as much as they liked the book.
Spelling: N practiced her lesson on two-syllable words.
History: N and C learned about the mysterious disappearance of Princes Edward and George, and about the coronation of Henry Tudor.
Geography: N and C filled in the European countries they know. They learned about Serbia from the National Geographic website.
Science: N and C learned about the function of particle accelerators, and about how scientists use prisms, x-rays, chemicals, and chromatography to identify the different elements in a substance. They drew dots on coffee filters with Sharpies, then used rubbing alcohol to separate the dyes in the ink.
Writing: N and C practiced some descriptive writing by re-writing a paragraph to change the tone.
Music: N continued practicing her scales. She practiced her new lesson.
C (age 10):
Math: C warmed up with mental math. Her lesson was on calculating sales tax (which included an “extra credit” explanation of why there is a sales tax) and on calculating change to be received back (and why it is sometimes necessary to make change). I’m going to continue to hammer this home, because it’s an important concept that can be a bit confusing.
Spelling: C completed her workbook introduction to her next lesson on the consonant digraphs “kn,” “gn,” “wr,” “gh,” “ph,” “ch,” and “ck.”
Bible: Combined class with N.
History: Combined class with N.
Geography: Combined class with N.
Science: Combined class with N.
Writing: Combined class with N.
Music: C continued working on her chord transitions, playing individual notes, and reading music. She continued her drumming lessons.
S (age 7):
Math: S counted to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s using her hundred number chart. She counted backwards from 30. She recited the days of the week and the months of the year. S learned how to write the number 34. Her lesson continued the concept of adding one to a number, this time without manipulatives.
Reading: S continued her unit of All About Reading. She warmed up by reading some flashcards (including the sight words “the” and “a”). S read flash cards of words using the short /i/ and short /a/ sounds. She still has a little trouble recognizing some letters, but I think it will remedy itself with repetition. I finished reading The Case of the Missing Marquess last night. I’m going to read it to N and C next. I really liked it!
Grammar: S continued memorizing “The Months.” She reviewed the list of pronouns she’s learned so far. She practiced orally replacing nouns with pronouns in sentences I dictated to her
Writing: S copied her name and some of the words she’s learning to read using a custom worksheet from HandwritingPractice.Net
