I was awoken early by Baby R, but we still had a rough time getting started this morning. Everyone was feeling rather sedentary from the weekend, and no one was particularly interested in getting moving. But we got going, and attitudes weren’t bad.
N (age 12):
Math: N began with an excruciatingly long session of mental math. She was unfocused and quite disinterested. She perked up once the lesson started, which was on subtracting mixed units. Out of all things math, she, for some inexplicable reason, finds this fun. She breezed through it.
Bible: N and C reviewed their memory verses (2 Timothy 3:16-17, Exodus 20:1-17, Psalm 1:1-6, Psalm 23:1-5, and Isaiah 53:1-10) and the books of the Bible. They learned about Jonah’s subsequent obedience. We discussed the rather strange and abrupt ending to the book of Jonah, and speculated as to why it ended as it did.
Spelling: N practiced her words with contractions and possessives.
History: N and C learned about King Henry V of England and the Hundred Years’ War. They located Agincourt on a map of France. We discussed Henry V’s political strategy for conquering France.
Writing: N and C learned how to write descriptive phrases to describe Sisyphean tasks. I love the phrase “Sisyphean tasks.”
Music: C continued practicing her scales. She continued her new lesson.
C (age 10):
Math: C warmed up with mental math. Her lesson was a review of the four steps involved in long division. She practiced with increasingly difficult division problems.
Spelling: C practiced her spelling words containing “ch” and “wh.”
Bible: Combined class with N.
Writing: Combined class with N.
History: Combined class with N.
Music: C continued working on her chord transitions, playing individual notes, and reading music. She continued her drumming lessons.
S (age 7):
Math: S counted to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s using her hundred number chart. She counted backwards from 30. She recited the days of the week and the months of the year. S learned how to write the number 32.
Reading: S continued her unit of All About Reading. She warmed up by reading some flashcards (including the sight words “the” and “a”). S was reintroduced to short i, v, f, and z. She read 15 words using the new letters. At first, she kept using the short /a/ vowel sound, but by the end, she was able to read the words properly and with increasing ease. S decided that she was not interested in Bunnicula. But I found a fantastic book with which to replace it! S and H had requested “scary” and “mysterious” for their bedtime story. At the library, I came upon what I assumed would be a fluffy, slightly scary mystery series called the Enola Holmes Mysteries. I love them so far! They’re surprisingly well-written and very reminiscent of the Sherlock Holmes stories (Enola Holmes is supposed to be Sherlock’s much younger sister). The vocabulary is advanced and the mystery is very well thought out so far. I am currently reading S (and H) a few chapters of The Case of the Missing Marquess each night.
Grammar: S continued memorizing “The Months.” She reviewed the growing list of pronouns she’s learning. She learned the pronouns “they,” “them,” “their,” and “theirs.”
Writing: S copied her name and some of the words she’s learning to read using a custom worksheet from HandwritingPractice.Net
